This session discusses the social production of knowledge in the HIV field and reviews the role of social science therein throughout the prior four decades. Then it reflects on what its main contribution might become in the fifth decade of the pandemic after several breakthroughs in biomedical research have transformed the landscape and targets have been set for 2030. Finally, it focuses on recent innovations in both social science theory and methods and also highlights areas where new theoretical and methodological approaches might be needed.
